House in Rokko

Tiny Houses in the City(Rizzoli)

This house is located on a small site in a quiet hillside residential neighborhood with a strict height regulation. The shape of the land has a long and narrow face, and our challenge was to design how to bring the natural light. The client favors a wooden cabin style, and didn’t mind having small rooms.

The house is in the dense residential neighborhood with two buildings on the both side, so it was difficult to bring the natural light. We thus separated the house into two buildings, and installed stairwell surrounded with glass walls and roofs in between to bring more natural light into the house. We call each building a cabin, and connect them with stairs. You can look over to the other cabin over the stairwell. The ground floor is made by mortar and there is a space underneath the stairwell to watch TV. When you sit in the stairwells between the cabins, you get a sense of being outdoors thanks to the glass walls. This creates the view of the house.
