MIZO (イタリアンリストランテ+カフェ) MIZO -ITALIAN EATERY & SPECIALTY COFFEE-

場所は京都の二条、大通りに面する人通りが絶えない環境にあり、間口が狭く奥行の深い敷地でした。

クライアントの要望は、そこにリストランテとカフェを併設したいということでした。また料理を充実させ、コーヒーにも力を入れたいということで、厨房エリアを大きくとりたいとのことでした。

私たちは、敷地の特徴である深い奥行を考え、手前に大きな開口を設けながら奥に窓を設けないことで、太陽光の光量を手前から奥に向かって徐々に抑えた明るさのグラデーションのある空間を提案しました。

手前のカフェスペースは外部との一体感があり明るい空間です。スタンド形式でコーヒーが楽しめる空間となっています。

奥のリストランテスペースは大通りの喧騒が抑えられた、暗がりのある小さい空間となっています。落ち着いてゆっくり食事が楽しめるように考えました。

小さな敷地ということもあり、外観は如何にして建物のボリュームの小ささを魅力的に見せるかを意識しました。外国籍のお客様も多い立地でもあり、小さな空間が持つ楽しさを感じてもらえればと思っています。

This long lot with a narrow frontage faces a main road with constant foot traffic in Kyoto’s Nijo district. Because the client planned to open a restaurant and café serving quality Italian cuisine and coffee, they needed a sizeable kitchen.
Our design accentuates the lot’s distinguishing characteristic, it’s depth, through the gradation of light: sunlight enters a large window at the front of the building and gradually fades toward the back, where there are no windows.
The standing café area near the front feels bright and unified with the outside environment while the small seating area toward the back is dimmer and buffered from the bustle of the street, offering a tranquil spot to enjoy a leisurely meal. Because the lot is so small, we took care to highlight the charm of the building’s modest volume.
Our goal was for diners—and particularly the many international visitors who frequent the Nijo area—to experience the unique pleasures of small spaces.
