House in Ibaraki

This site is in a quiet residential neighborhood with the uniformly subdivided lot of lands, surrounded by many old fashioned cookie-cutter houses. Our mission was to add uniqueness to this featureless environment. The client requested us a house that has privacy from outside. The neighbors have walls in front of the houses and some spaces between the walls to their houses. We designed the structure in a shape of stairs, and it rises upwards toward the back to make the wall look part of the building to avoid creating an oppressive feeling in the area. The “steps” are also glass windows that bring natural light to the concrete floor, giving it a sense of outdoor. From the living room, the floor with the natural light is part of the sight. They can look over the sky and the garden through the windows on the lower part of the concrete floor and lightwell without being bothered by neighbouring houses.
