Terrace Terrace

交通量の多い交差点に位置する美容室兼住宅。
大きな通り沿いにはお店が立ち並ぶエリア。
更地を分割した細長い敷地を購入しようかと思っている、という相談から計画がはじまった。

建築主の希望としては、

・交差点から住宅があることを感じさせないようにしたい
・車4台と駐輪スペースが必要
・道路からはバリアフリーでアプローチ
・通りから、待合や受付が見えるようにしたい
・カット面は管理がしやすく、見通しの良いカットスペースにしたい
・カットスペースにはあまり直接光が入らないようにしたい
・バックオフィスで子供の面倒を見ながら仕事をしたい
・既存の店舗の椅子やカウンター、照明などの什器を再利用したい

であった。

店舗兼住宅を新築する場合、テナント形式の店舗に比べて改装を頻繁にしないということがある。店舗として存在感を示しつつも、継続的に利用してもらえるような、飽きのこない控えめな存在、ということを念頭にいつもデザインを考えている。

内部は、カウンセリングをしながらお客様ひとりひとりを大事にすることを感じてもらえる、個室感のあるカットスペースにすることを提案した。
ご夫婦２人で運営するという管理からの都合上、個室というコンセプトはキープしつつ、ある程度目線が通るような調整をしつつも、カットエリア毎に距離を取り、壁面に凹凸を設けながらブース状のプランとしている。

外観はひとつひとつというイメージを反映するよう、カットスペースのスケールのボックスが全体に組み合わせた様子としている。
仕上げはもう一方の古い住宅街の表情に合わせて、1階部分は木の縁甲板張、2階部分はモルタル仕上げとした。
車移動がメインの地域であるので、交差点にオブジェクトが置かれているようなイメージとして、車から見たときに存在感を感じれるようにしている。

着工直前にコロナ渦の問題が起こったが、元々距離感や個室感といったコンセプトで進めていたため、設計変更なく予定通り工事が進んだ。
西側の敷地部分は、集合住宅が建設される予定。

This combined salon and residence is located at a busy intersection, with shops lining the wide road it sits on. The clients approached us during the process of purchasing a long, narrow lot on newly subdivided vacant land. Their requests were as follows:

• A building that does not look like a residence from the street
• Space to park four cars and everal bicycles
• A barrier-free approach from the street
• A waiting room and reception area that are visible from the street
• An easy-to-manage cutting area with good visibility
• Minimal direct light in the cutting area
• A back office where they can work while looking after their children
• Reuse of chairs, counters, light fixtures, and other items from their previous salon

Owner-operated shops with an attached residence tend to be remodeled less frequently than shops that are rented out. In this type of project, we focus on giving the shop a strong presence while keeping the design modest so that the residents can use and enjoy it for many years.

We initially proposed a cutting area with room-like spaces that give customers a sense of being valued and receiving individual attention. Client feedback led us to retain the general concept of individual rooms while also incorporating clear lines of sight to ease management, since the clients are a married couple who run the salon on their own. The cutting areas are distanced from each other and recessed to create booth-like spaces.

The exterior is an assemblage of boxes the size of the cutting booths, reflecting the concept of individual space and attention. The façade is wood paneling on the first story and stucco on the second story, echoing the atmosphere of the old residential district nearby. Because most people in this neighborhood get around by car, we wanted the building to be a sculptural form that would catch the attention of people passing the intersection in cars.

The Covid-19 crisis hit just before construction began, but because the design incorporated concepts of distancing and room-like cutting spaces from the beginning, work proceeded without any changes to the design. An apartment complex is planned on the west side of the building.
